About Me

Hi!

Hi and welcome to Odd & Quirky Books! My name is Márcia Monteiro and I’m a Portuguese girl with a passion for books. Since I know myself I always remember having a book (or multiple) with me. Most times I was too busy and I didn’t read it but I felt good knowing it was there.

Why weird books?

I’ve always been a very visual person and I loved whenever I picked a book up and discovered it wasn’t just words on a blank page. Be it illustrations, files, strange formatting, cut-outs, text upside down, even the tiniest feature that made the book unusual made me extra excited to read it.

Why create a blog?

Most of these ‘weird’ books are not very well-known and don’t stand out in bookshelves mixed in with all the other more ‘normal’ books.

This is why I decided to create this blog. My goal is to gather the highest amount of odd books in one place clearly for you to be able to find some hidden treasures and maybe even a new favourite!

Have fun and leave suggestions!

I hope you have fun browsing Odd & Quirky Books! Don’t hesitate to reach out and share your own quirky book!

All the best,

Márcia Monteiro

9 Odd Books on My TBR Pile

Here is a list of 10 strange books I've yet to read. Obviously, this list is never-ending as new books get published and therefore there will be more lists like these in the future.  It is a bit difficult to find odd books as they do not belong to any specific genre (though I have seen people calling them ergodic books) so I have to do a bit of a hunt to find out if a book has any strange elements to its design or formatting. Once I find one, I feel accomplished, though! 1. S. by J.J. Abrams After House of Leaves, S. is probably the book everyone talks about being odd. The design is excellent, and this is probably the most beautiful book I own. It has a sleeve and the book itself is made to look like a library copy filled with extra documents, postcards, letters and even a napkin! The story itself is mysterious as there are two sides to it: the story itself, Ship of Theseus by Straka, and the annotations two college students, Jennifer and Eric write back and forth in ...

12 Odd Books I Read

Usually, when people hear about ‘strange books’, they think they’re bad or simply too complicated to be enjoyed. However, that’s not true and I can prove it. For a long time, I refused to read out of my comfort zone declining every book that sounded the least bit weird. Now it’s the total opposite: I welcome the weird! The more unconventional a book is, the more I want to experience it (yes, because some books can’t just be read in the traditional way). So here is a list of twelve of the strangest books I’ve read (by strange, read unusually formatted or books that aren’t just words on a page). They vary in genre and degree of weirdness. Some I liked more than others but they are, overall, interesting and different. 1. House of Leaves   by Mark Z. Danielewski The famous  House of Leaves , that everyone talks about… Well, it’s for a reason. This is one of the first odd books I read and it made me fall in love with this genre. Scary, challenging and unlike any book you’ve se...
